GRE FAQ

The GRE, developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), is a standardized test designed to assess a candidate’s readiness for graduate-level academic work. It is widely used by universities and graduate programs globally

The GRE consists of three sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning: Measures the ability to analyze and evaluate written material, understand and interpret information, and synthesize information.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Evaluates mathematical skills, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
  • Analytical Writing: Assesses the ability to articulate complex ideas, analyze an argument, and present a well-reasoned response

Scores are reported separately for Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections on a scale of 130-170. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0-6. Scores are based on the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions.

The test duration is approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes. The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are 41 minutes and 47 minutes long respectively, and the Analytical Writing section is 30 minutes long.

The GRE is available year-round at authorized test centers. Test takers can register for any available date that suits them. There’s no specific testing window, making it convenient for individuals with varying schedules.

Test takers can register online through the official GRE website. Registration involves creating an ETS account, selecting a test date and location, and paying the registration fee. Early registration is recommended to secure preferred test dates.

The GRE registration fee is approximately USD 220. Additional fees may apply for services such as rescheduling or sending additional score reports.

Preparation strategies include a combination of content review, taking practice tests, and familiarizing oneself with the test format. Many resources, including official GRE study materials, test prep books, and online courses, are available with LV Academy to aid in your preparation.

A good score depends on the specific graduate program and institution. Test takers should research the average or minimum GRE scores required by the programs they are interested in applying to. Highly competitive programs may have higher score expectations.

GRE scores are valid for five years from the test date. After this period, scores are no longer reportable, and individuals may need to retake the test if their scores have expired.

Yes, test takers can retake the GRE. However, there are restrictions on how often one can retake the test. The waiting period between consecutive test attempts is 21 days, and there is a limit of five tests within any continuous rolling 12-month period.

While both are graduate-level admissions tests, the GRE is more widely accepted across various disciplines, including business schools. The GMAT is specifically designed for business school admissions and focuses more on analytical and integrated reasoning skills.

Fee waivers are available for eligible test takers who demonstrate financial need. These waivers cover the cost of the test and additional services, providing access to the GRE for individuals who might face financial barriers

Yes, test takers have the flexibility to select which set of GRE scores to send to
institutions. Only the scores chosen by the test taker will be visible to the designated
recipients, allowing for strategic score reporting.

No, there is no penalty for incorrect answers on the GRE. Test takers are encouraged to answer every question, as scores are based solely on the number of correct responses.

Yes, a basic on-screen calculator is provided for the Quantitative Reasoning section. However, it’s important to note that test takers are not allowed to bring their own calculators.

The Analytical Writing section is scored by trained readers on a scale from 0 to 6, with half-point increments. Scores are based on the overall quality of the essays, including critical thinking, coherence, and the ability to present a well-reasoned argument. LV Academy specially focuses in training the enrolled students to score higher in the AWA section.
